 Arabic wazir

Chief minister of the 'Abbasid caliphs and later a high government official in various Muslim countries. The office was originally held and defined by the Barmakids in the 8th century; they acted as the caliph's representative to the public, later serving a similar function for various sultans. In the Ottoman Empire the title could be held by several people at once; under Mehmed II the position of grand vizier, the absolute representative of the sultan, was created.

But there are quarters of some of these cities which are still partly traditional, like the area around the Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore or the Grand Bazaar of Tehran or of course the old Mamluk and Fatamid Cairo.
Wazir outlines the historical roots of NGOs in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century reform and liberation movements in British India and shows that although NGOs have succeeded in extending and diversifying their activities and initiatives, they have failed to make a significant impact on overall literacy levels in India.
