Weatherford, William, c.1780–1824, Native American chief, b. present-day Alabama, also called Red Eagle. In the War of 1812 he led the Creek war party, stirred by Tecumseh Tecumseh (tĭkŭm`sē), 1768?–1813, chief of the Shawnee , b. probably in Clark co., Ohio.

There his warriors, refusing to heed his plea for restraint, massacred some 500 whites. In the battle of Horseshoe Bend Horseshoe Bend, a turn on the Tallapoosa River, near Dadeville, E central Ala., site of a battle on Mar. 27, 1814, in which the Creeks, led by chief William Weatherford , were significantly defeated by a militia under the command of Andrew Jackson.
