MSN TVThe first Internet TV service that obtained widespread distribution of its set-top boxes in the retail channel. Developed in 1996 by WebTV and acquired by Microsoft in 1997, it originally used only an analog modem and telephone line to deliver the Web and e-mail to the TV set. In 2004, MSN TV 2 debuted for high-speed Internet users and provides audio and video streaming from the users's PC or the Internet to the TV. For information, visit www.msntv.com. FEDS LOOK AT MICROSOFT: In a sign of the government's continuing scrutiny of Microsoft, the Justice Department issued a formal request to the big software company last week, seeking internal documents concerning Microsoft's planned $425 million purchase of WebTV Networks Inc. WebTV Networks is currently the only content provider for the set-top devices. He is perhaps best known for democratizing the Internet with the 1995 founding of WebTV Networks, where he was the president and CEO of WebTV Networks for four years until Microsoft bought the company in 1997 for more than $500 million. |
