Weisse Elster

 

a river in the German Democratic Republic; a right tributary of the Saale River. Length, 247 km. Its source is in the western foothills of the Erzgebirge Mountains, and it flows mainly along the hilly plain of the Thuringian basin. The Weisse Elster is fed by snow and rain, and its waters are at their flood level in spring and summer. There are reservoirs in the basin of the upper reaches of the river. The cities of Gera, Zeitz, and Leipzig are north- east of the Weisse Elster.
