Weissenburg

a city in Alsace, France, near which a battle was fought on Aug. 4, 1870, at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

The French 2nd Infantry Division under the command of General Douay with a cavalry brigade firmly repelled the attacks of six divisions of the German Third Army of Prince Frederick Charles for seven hours and retreated only under threat of encirclement, after losing 2,300 men. The Germans lost more than 1,500 men. The Battle of Weissenburg showed the inadequacy of the offensive plans of the French command.
