On central northern border of CO, east of Fort Collins; original county, organized Nov 1, 1861, (prior to statehood). A portion of the county was used to create Broomfield County on November 15, 2001. Name Origin: For Lewis Ledyard Weld, first Secretary of the CO Territory.

Area (sq mi): 4021.56 (land 3992.45; water 29.11). Pop per sq mi: 57.30.
Pop 2005: 228,943. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 26.50%; 1990-2000 37.30%. Pop 2000: 180,936 (White 70.00%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 27.00%; Asian 0.80%; Other 17.00%). Foreign born: 9.30%. Median age: 30.90.
Income 2000: per capita $18,957; median household $42,321; Pop below poverty level: 12.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,038-$24,279.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: 1.30%. Median travel time to work: 23.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 33.00%.
