Wellek, René (1903–  ) literary critic; born in Vienna, Austria. He came to America in 1939 and taught at Yale (1946). His Theory of Literature (with Austin Warren, 1949) became a manual of New Criticism; he wrote the monumental 7-volume History of Modern Criticism (1955–91).
