In northeastern IN, south of Ft. Wayne; established Feb 7, 1835 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Capt. William Wells (1770?-1812), a white man adopted by Miami Indian Chief Little Turtle (c.1752-1812), who served with the Indians; he returned to the white men and served as Indian agent, then fought the Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811).

Area (sq mi): 370.41 (land 369.96; water 0.45). Pop per sq mi: 75.90.
Pop 2005: 28,085. State rank: 56. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.80%; 1990-2000 6.40%. Pop 2000: 27,600 (White 97.40%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 0.80%. Median age: 36.80.
Income 2000: per capita $19,158; median household $43,934; Pop below poverty level: 5.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,911-$26,226.

In central ND, northeast of Bismarck; organized as Gingras County Jan 4, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Sheridan County; name changed Feb 26, 1881. Name Origin: For Edward Payson Wells (1847-1936), ND territorial legislator (1881), banker, and developer of the James River valley.
