Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Historic Site Location: At the end of Little Harbor Road, 2 miles from downtown Portsmouth, off Route 1A. Facilities: Historic home, picnic area, restrooms, visitor center. Activities: Guided tours. Special Features: This 40-room mansion was the home of Benning Wentworth, New Hampshire's first royal governor, who served from 1741-1767. The house contains the council chamber where the state's first provincial government conducted its affairs in the pre-Revolutionary War period. The mansion is one of the most outstanding homes still remaining from the colonial era and is designated a National Historic Landmark.
