Werboczy, Ist Van

    0.01 sec.
Werböczy, Ist Ván

Born circa 1458; died circa 1541. Hungarian political figure, jurist, and diplomat. Large landowner.

Werböczy held a number of offices, from registrar of laws (1482) to palatin (from 1525), at the court of the Hungarian kings. He took part in the compilation of the laws of 1486 and 1494, which consolidated the privileges of the middle and petty nobility. In 1514 he compiled a code of the feudal law of Hungary—the so-called Tripartium.
