Weslaco

(wĕs`lĭkō), city (1990 pop. 21,877), Hidalgo co., extreme S Tex., in the irrigated region of the lower Rio Grande valley; inc. 1921. Cotton, citrus, and vegetables are grown, and there are fruit- and vegetable-processing companies as well as other agriculture-related industries. Sheet metal, corrugated containers, metal cans, and work pants are manufactured. The city's name was derived from the initials of the W. E. Stewart Land Company, which promoted the townsite in 1917. Weslaco is in a popular winter resort area and is linked to Mexico by an international bridge. An agricultural research center of Texas A&M Univ. is there.
