Westernizer

Member of an intellectual movement in 19th-century Russia. Primarily active in the 1840s and '50s, Westernizers emphasized Russia's common historic destiny with the West and viewed western Europe as a model for Russian modernization. They were opposed by the Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's traditions and destiny were unique.
