Westfield. 1 City (1990 pop. 38,372), Hampden co., SW Mass., a residential and industrial suburb of Springfield, on the Westfield River; settled c.1660, inc. as a city 1920. Bicycles, machinery, and paper and metal products are made. Westfield State College is there. 2 Town (1990 pop. 28,870), Union co., NE N.J.; settled late 17th cent. as part of Elizabethtown, inc. 1903. It is almost entirely residential. Earlier this year, the Junior House at Westfield was awarded the Green Flag status and now, following a recent inspection, the whole school can proudly display its eco-credentials.
