former county, N England. In 1974, Westmorland became part of the nonmetropolitan county of CumbriaCumbria,
county (1991 pop. 486,900), 2,635 sq mi (6,826 sq km), extreme NW England. The county stretches from the Morecambe Bay to Soloway Firth along the Irish Sea coast.

a former county in Great Britain, in England; located primarily in the Cumbrian Mountains. Area, 2,000 sq km. Population, 72,700 (1971). The main city is Kendal. Westmorland is primarily an agricultural area. Sheep are bred on natural pastures. The new administrative reorganization of 1973–75 placed Westmorland within the county of Cumbria.
