Whatmough, Joshua (1897–1964) linguist; born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England. He was educated in England at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge before becoming chairman of the department of comparative philology (1926–51) and a member of the linguistics department (1951–63) at Harvard. He was an influential editor of Harvard Studies in Classical Philology (1932–34; 1941–48) whose many publications included Foundations of Roman Italy (1937) and Dialects of Ancient Gaul (1970). |
