Wheeler, Benjamin (Ide) (1854–1927) university president; born in Randolph, Mass. A University of Heidelberg Ph.D., he was a professor of Greek and comparative philology. As president of the University of California (1899–1919), he guided extensive expansion, adding 20 departments, attracting an internationally renowned faculty, and strengthening graduate divisions and research activities.
