Wheeler, William (Almon) (1819–87) vice-president, businessman; born in Malone, N.Y. Following an impoverished youth, he became a lawyer and businessman. Known as a scrupulously honest congressman, he was elected vice-president under Rutherford B. Hayes (1877–81) but displayed little enthusiasm for the office. How to thank TFD for its existence?
