Size: 42,503 acres.
Established: Authorized on November 8, 1965; established on October 21, 1972. Of the three parts of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, the Whiskeytown Unit is the only unit administered by the National Park Service. The Shasta and Trinity units are administered by the Forest Service.
Location: The Whiskeytown Unit of the national recreation area is on CA 299 off I-5 near Redding, California.
Facilities: Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, bathhouse, visitor center (é), self-guided tour/trail.
Activities: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, swimming, boating, canoeing, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, hunting, gold panning (recreational), interpretive programs.
Special Features: Whiskeytown Unit, with its mountainous backcountry and large reservoir, provides a multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities as well as remains of buildings built during the Gold Rush. Whiskeytown Lake provides 36 miles of shoreline and 3,200 surface acres for recreation.
