White, Byron (Raymond) (“Whizzer”) (1917– ) Supreme Court justice; born in Fort Collins, Colo. After an All-American football career at the University of Colorado, he played professional football for one season (1938) with the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) before going to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar; he returned to the U.S.A. to attend Yale Law School (1940) and he played two seasons with the Detroit Lions before serving with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He practiced law in Colorado before his old friend John F. Kennedy named him deputy U.S. attorney general (1961–62) and then appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1962). Despite his adventurous past, he turned out to be fairly conservative in his legal opinions. He retired from the Court in 1993. How to thank TFD for its existence?
