White, Leonard D. (Dupee) (1891–1958) political scientist, historian; born in Acton, Mass. He pioneered higher education in public administration at the University of Chicago (1920–56), himself writing a standard introductory text (1926, several times revised). As U.S. Civil Service Commissioner (1934–37), he developed civil service examinations and training for university graduates. His books include four volumes of history of American public administration (1948–58).
