White, Lynn (Townsend), Jr. (1907–87) historian, college president; born in San Francisco, Calif. An internationally known medieval scholar specializing in medieval technology and the religious background of industrialism, he attended Stanford University (B.A. 1928), Union Theological Seminary (M.A. 1929) and Harvard (M.A. 1930; Ph.D. 1934). He taught at Princeton and Stanford (1933–43), was president of Mills College (1943–58), then taught at the University of California: Los Angeles (1958–74). His books include Medieval Technology and Social Change (1962) and Medieval Religion and Technology (1978).
