Size: Nearly 800,000 acres.
Location: Northern New Hampshire and southwestern Maine. Accessible by US 2, 3, and 302. Nearby cities/towns include Berlin, Conway, Gorham, Lancaster, and Littleton.
Facilities: 3 cabins, 23 campgrounds, 3 group camps, 10 picnic sites, trails (1,200+ miles), 10 ski areas (concession operated), scenic drives, lighthouses, 5 wilderness areas.
Activities: Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, jet skiing, hiking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling.
Special Features: Cascading streams and landscape ranging from rugged treeless summits to wooded hollows; more than 20 waterfalls. Among the forest's ranges and ridges are the Northeast's highest mountains -- the Presidential Range -- which culminate in the bare granite summit of 6,288-foot Mount Washington. A segment of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the forest (see entry in national trails section).
