A coral reef disease that is typified by a loss of tissue that is visible as a band of bare white skeleton.

The first three diseases to be reported in coral--black and white band disease and white plague--were not described until the 1970s (Richardson 1998), and highly destructive effects were only first noted during the early 1980s with the recognition that structurally-important acroporid corals were being eliminated by white band disease throughout areas of the Caribbean (Gladfelter 1982).
Twenty years' worth of effort by other researchers has failed to yield consistent identification of a pathogen in another affliction, white band disease.
