On northern border of GA, northeast of Rome; organized Dec 20, 1851 from Murray County. Name Origin: For the Rev. George Whitefield (1714-70), prominent Church of England clergyman who established Bethesda, one of the first orphanages in the U.S. Spelling changed by clerical error.
