WhoisBefore the Web, Whois was strictly an Internet service used to query a host and find out if a certain user was registered on that system. Originally developed by the military, others followed with their own Whois databases, which provide white pages directories. See finger.

Spammers steal other people's resources: bandwidth, server capacity, whois databases, netadmin time, time spent deleting. The WHOIS database is also mined by telemarketing companies who add unsuspecting registrants to their call lists. Direct user involvement will help ensure that ICANN takes actions that reflect individual Internet users' needs in Asia-Pacific on matters such as implementing internationalized domain names, introducing new domain names, and what safeguards are needed for personal information available in the WHOIS database (to name a few issues ICANN is working on). |
