Widener, Harry Elkins (wīd`nər), 1885–1912, American bibliophile, b. Philadelphia. He had the greatest Robert Louis Stevenson collection in existence. Widener died at the age of 27 on the Titanic. His library went by will to Harvard, where it is installed with other collections in the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library, donated by his mother. Widener, Harry Elkins (1885–1912) book collector; born in Philadelphia. Born into a wealthy family, he graduated from Harvard University and devoted himself to book collecting. Returning from researches in London, he lost his life on the Titanic; his mother established a library in his name at Harvard University. |
