Wild fence [′wīld ‚fens] (engineering) A wooden enclosure about 16 feet 4.8 meters square and 8 feet 2.4 meters high with a precipitation gage in its center; the function of the fence is to minimize eddies around the gage, and thus ensure a catch which will be representative of the actual rainfall or snowfall.
