Sandwiched between inspiring stories of a soldier's family bringing home a pup from the battlefields of Iraq and the community efforts to save a mother whale and her calf in California is the news account of an 11-year-old boy slaying a record-sized wild hog that turned out later not to be so wild (Register-Guard, May 29). Male panthers must travel over such large areas of land because their prey, mostly deer and wild hog, require vast areas of wilderness to find enough vegetation to survive. The House has passed a bill that would penalize participants in these rodeo-type spectator events where a dog inside a fenced area confronts a wild hog released from a pen. |
