Wilhelm, Hoyt

Wilhelm, (James) Hoyt (1923–  ) baseball pitcher; born in Huntersville, N.C. During World War II he distinguished himself in combat during the Battle of the Bulge (1944). During his 21-year career (1952–72), mostly as a reliever for the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox, he appeared in more games (1,070) than any other pitcher in history. A right-handed knuckleballer, he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1985.
