Willey, Gordon R. (Randolph) (1913– ) anthropologist, archaeologist; born in Chariton, Iowa. Bowditch Professor of Archaeology at Harvard (1950–83), he was a leading archaeologist and theorist of New World prehistory known particularly for his settlement pattern studies. His published works include reports on Peruvian, Panamanian, and Maya archaeology and An Introduction to American Archaeology (2 vols. 1966–71). He won the 1974 Kidder Medal.
