Spence, William Guthrie

 

Born 1846, on the Orkney Islands; died Dec. 13,1926, in Terang, Victoria. Australian political figure.

Beginning in the 1870’s, Spence was active in the trade union movement. From 1901 to 1917 he represented the Labor Party in parliament. Spence then drifted to the right. In 1916 he spoke in favor of the introduction of compulsory military conscription, for which he was expelled from the party. He joined the Nationalist Party, founded by W. Hughes in 1917.
