Win Sharing files
All Windows machines can be set up to share their files with other users on the network. You can make the entire hard disk sharable or you can select specific folders. To make a drive or folder sharable, do the following:
Windows Vista - Share a Drive
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the drive icon.
3. Click Share.
4. Click Advanced Sharing.
5. Check Share this folder.
6. To allow others to make changes, select Permissions.
Windows Vista - Share a Folder
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the folder icon.
3. Click Share.
4. Click the down arrow to the right of the blank field.
5. Select Guest and then Add.
6. To allow others to make changes, right
click Reader and select Co-owner.
7. After finishing, your folder or drive icon
will include two people (see below).
Windows XP
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the folder or the drive icon.
3. Click Sharing and Security.
4. Click Share this folder on the network.
5. To allow others to make changes, click
Allow network users to change my files.
6. After finishing, your folder or drive icon
will include a serving hand (see below).
Windows 95/98
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the folder or the drive icon.
3. Click Sharing.
4. Click Shared As.
If you keep access permission to Read
Only, then nobody can erase or overwrite
any data in your shared folder or drive.
5. After finishing, your folder or drive icon
will include a serving hand.
Windows 2000
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the folder or the drive icon.
3. Click Sharing.
4. Click Share This Folder.
5. Click Permissions and change if required.
If you change access permission to Read

any data in your shared folder or drive.
6. After finishing, your folder or drive icon
will include a serving hand.
Windows NT 4
1. Launch Explorer.
2. Right click the folder or the drive icon.
3. Click Sharing.
4. Click Shared As.

| When drives and folders are shared, Windows modifies their icons. Vista adds two people, while XP adds a serving hand. The Vista icon is barely discernible, but shows the heads and bodies of two people. |
Can't Make It Sharable?
In Windows 95/98, if you are connected to the network, but you cannot make your folder or disk sharable, chances are File and Print Sharing were never turned on in your computer. To turn File and Print Sharing on, do the following:
Turning File/Print Sharing On (Windows 95/98)
1. Select Start menu/Settings/Control panel.
2. Select Network control panel.
3. Check files sharing and/or print sharing.
