Microsoft defaults Windows to hiding the file extension, apparently thinking people might rename the file and inadvertently change the extension, which would render the file useless. However, this important element of the file name can easily be made visible, and it is one of the first things many power users do after installing Windows.

In Windows 7, Vista and XP, to unhide the extension, launch Explorer and select Tools/Folder Options/View. Then, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." See extension.
