WinWord

A nickname for the Windows version of Microsoft Word (Word was first released for DOS, then Windows). It has also been used for the file name of the executable and the default folder name for the application. See Microsoft Word.

it sounds like the Word portion of your Registry (Windows' "brains") got scrambled so it no longer instructs Word files to use the winword.

If Word closed correctly, you'll see nothing that has the word Winword or Word in the list.
