Microsoft Security Essentials
A suite of free antivirus and security applications for Windows from Microsoft. Introduced in September 2009, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) enables the company to seed the huge security software market. Other companies such as AVG, Panda Security and BitDefender also offer free antivirus scanning, hoping that users eventually migrate to paid versions with more features.

Microsoft Security Essentials superseded the Windows Defender antispyware, acquired by Microsoft from GIANT Company Software in 2004. Windows Defender, which came with Vista and was available for previous Windows versions, monitored all programs starting up in a Windows machine to ensure they were valid. See Windows Live OneCare.
