Windows on Windows

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.03 sec.

A 16-bit module within Windows NT that executes Windows 3.1 applications. Also known as WOW or NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine), Windows on Windows runs as an emulated DOS subsystem under NT. When a 3.1 application calls Windows, the calls are converted into their NT equivalents and run in 32-bit native mode. Windows 3.1 applications can crash each other but not NT, thus multiple Windows on Windows sessions can be launched to prevent conflict between two or more 3.1 programs.
