In northwest-central AL, northwest of Birmingham; organized as Hancock County Feb 12, 1858 from Walker County; renamed Jan 22, 1858. Name Origin: Originally for John Hancock (1737-93), noted signer of the Declaration of Independence; then for John Anthony Winston (1812-71), Confederate army officer and governor of AL (1854-1857)
