Niedere Tauern

a mountain range in the Eastern Alps, in Austria. It measures about 100 km in length and rises to elevations of 2,863 m (Mount Hochgolling). The Niedere Tauern is composed of granites, gneisses, schists, and limestones. The relief is alpine, with cirques, trough valleys, and mountain lakes. Up to an elevation of 2,000 m, there are forests of fir and larch. Rye and oats are sown on the lower slopes. The Niedere Tauern is a popular winter sports area.
