The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), for example, showed that estrogen therapy conferred about a 40% increased stroke risk, compared with placebo; the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study (HERS) showed a 20%--though not significant--increase in risk with estrogen therapy; and the Women's Estrogen for Stroke Trial (WEST) showed a threefold greater risk of fatal stroke in those taking estrogen therapy.
A current study, the Women's Estrogen for Stroke Trial, looked at the use of estrogen post-stroke instead.
The Women's Estrogen for Stroke Trial (WEST) was the first randomized, controlled clinical trial of estrogen therapy for secondary prevention of cerebrovascular disease including stroke and TIA, transient ischemic attacks.
