Wood, Edith Elmer (1871–1945) housing reformer; born in Portsmouth, N.H. After graduating from Smith College (1890), she wrote fiction, undertook settlement house work, and married before launching her influential, life-long career in housing reforms. As lobbyist, writer, and government consultant, she helped define New Deal housing policy.
