Woods, William Burnham (1824–87) Supreme Court justice; born in Newark, Ohio. He served the Union Army and fought in several major Civil War battles, earning the rank of brigadier general. He was appointed a U.S. circuit judge for Georgia (1869–80) until President Hayes named him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1881–87).
