On the northern border of OK, northwest of Enid; original county; organized as County "M" in 1893 (prior to statehood); name changed later; re-formed Nov 16, 1907. Name Origin: For Lt. Col. Samuel N. Wood (?-1814), career army officer killed in the war of 1812. The letter s was a clerical error allowed to stand.

Area (sq mi): 1290.07 (land 1286.57; water 3.51). Pop per sq mi: 6.60.
Pop 2005: 8,546. State rank: 62. Pop change: 2000-20005 -6.00%; 1990-2000 -0.20%. Pop 2000: 9,089 (White 91.90%; Black or African American 2.40%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 0.50%; Other 3.70%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 37.80.
Income 2000: per capita $17,487; median household $28,927; Pop below poverty level: 15.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,490-$25,515.
