Woodville, Richard Caton, 1825–55, American genre painter, b. Baltimore. He turned from medical studies to painting and in 1845 studied in Düsseldorf. He spent most of his brief working life in Europe, but his popular paintings, which exhibit a relish for varied characterizations and interior detail, were widely distributed in the United States in prints. Among his works are War News From Mexico (National Acad. of Design, New York City) and The Sailor's Wedding (Walters Art Gall., Baltimore). Woodville, Richard Caton (1825–c. 1855) painter; born in Baltimore, Md. He studied medicine (c. 1842), painting in Düsseldorf, Germany (1845–51), and became an expatriate in Paris and London. He is known for genre works, such as Politics in an Oyster House (1848). |
