Woodward, Joanne (1930– ) film actress; born in Thomasville, Ga. (wife of Paul Newman). After starting on Broadway and in television dramas, she made her first film in 1955, later winning the Academy Award for The Three Faces of Eve (1957). She starred in two films directed by her husband—Rachel Rachel (1968) and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972)—and has also been an activist on behalf of liberal social and political causes.
