The former name of MCI. Based in Jackson, MS, WorldCom, Inc. was a major, international telecommunications carrier. It was founded in 1983 by Bernard Ebbers as Long Distance Discount Service (LDDS), a reseller of AT&T WATS lines to small businesses. LDDS grew by acquiring more than 70 companies, including IDB WorldCom, a leading international carrier whose name it adopted; WilTel, a major telecom carrier; and MFS Communications, an international phone company and parent of UUNET, a prominent Internet provider. |

Sprint had been discussing a merger with MCI Worldcom for two weeks but received a $100 billion unsolicited offer Saturday from BellSouth, the Atlanta-based Baby Bell company, prompting MCI Worldcom to raise its bid Monday. NEW YORK -- The WORLDCOM Public Relations Group today announced the creation of a Global Rapid Response Team, which brings together senior public relations professionals from around the world to help clients manage during a crisis. Robert Hartwig, chief economist for the Insurance Information Institute, said WorldCom appears to have $100 million in D&O coverage with a $10 million deductible and $20 million in copayments, written by at least five insurers. |
