Barnsley (bärnz`lē), city (1991 pop. 76,783) and metropolitan district, N England. Coal mining, engineering, and clothing industries dominate the local economy. A mining and technical college is in Barnsley. BarnsleyTown and metropolitan borough (pop., 2001: 218,062), northern England. Located on the River Dearne, the town lies in the ceremonial county of South Yorkshire. Its major growth came in the 19th century as a coal-mining town in the heart of the Yorkshire coalfield.
