Worthington, Henry (Rossiter) (1817–80) hydraulic engineer, inventor; born in New York City. He trained as a hydraulic engineer. Among his early inventions was a feeding pump for steam boilers, and he later designed a direct steam pump that was widely used in water supply systems and for pumping oil through pipelines. He was a founder of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. |
