Wotton, William

Wotton, William, 1666–1727, English scholar. He is best known for his Reflections upon Ancient and Modern Learning (1694), a defense of contemporary learning written in response to an essay by Sir William Temple Temple, Sir William, 1628–99, English diplomat and author. He was married in 1655 to Dorothy Osborne . They settled in Ireland, and in 1661 Temple entered the Irish parliament.
