| The Rayleigh waves reached the network of six seismometers around Mount Wrangell about an hour after the quake occurred in Sumatra, says Michael West, a seismologist at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. Local schoolchildren researched, designed and built interpretive signs, assisted by the Wrangell Institute for Science and the Environment. There also is a dining room, as well as an outdoor patio to view Mount Wrangell, Mount Drum and Mount Blackburn and enjoy the dry, warm summer nights the area is known for, Ball said. |
