Wright, Arthur Frederick

Wright, Arthur Frederick (1913–76) historian; born in Portland, Ore. A Harvard Ph.D., he taught at Stanford (1947–59) and Yale (1959–76) Universities and was a leading Asia scholar of his generation. He focused on pre-modern Chinese social and intellectual history in works including Buddhism in Chinese History (1959, revised 1971) and The Sui Dynasty (1978).
